<![CDATA[Bluefield Daily Telegraph: Obituaries]]> (1)

Weldon Warren McKinney, 77, of Rock, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2024 following a battle with lung cancer. Born January 31, 1947 in Matoaka, he was the son of the late Wiley McKinney and Violet Green McKinney. Growing up in southern West Virginia, Weldon relished both city (yes, I just referred to Matoaka as a city) and farm life. Following graduation from Spanishburg High School, Weldon joined the US Navy where he spent four years triangulating and locating Russian submarines (he did not know he was allowed to talk about that until he saw it on The History Channel years later). Following his time in the Navy, Weldon began working for Norfolk Southern where he became an engineer driving trains (or as Dad would put it "honey, you don't drive a train, you run a train."). While working for the railroad, he met the love of his life, Judy Carol Justice McKinney. Judy was working for the post office and Weldon's brother (a fellow Navy Veteran and postal worker) made him aware of the young postal worker. Meeting Judy led to a 45-year relationship and 44-year marriage where they became the proud parents of four boys. Weldon was a proud Veteran, railroader, husband, father, and grandfather. An accomplished farmer with a truly green thumb, he loved golfing, hunting, and fishing. None of these made him happier than when he was sharing them with his grandchildren. He could spend hours out back teaching them to shoot, and he did (all the kids had to do was ask Poppa). He helped his grandbabies start their own gardens and instill in them the love he had for the growing. If you could sum Weldon McKinney up in one word it would be family. You could talk with Weldon about any of his hobbies, but what he loved talking about most was his grandbabies, and how proud he and Judy are of the family they created. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Jean Lavigne, Eldee McKinney, James McKinney, Billy McKinney and Jack McKinney. Survivors include his wife, Judy Carol Justice McKinney; his four boys, their wives and nine grandchildren: eldest son, Brandon Warren McKinney, second son, Brian Weldon and his wife Mary Beth, and their children Ronan Justice, Aralynn Rose, Ashlyn Ryleigh, and Liam Iley McKinney, third son, Patrick Wiley and his wife Erica, and their children Aidan Wesley, Evelyn Rae and Easton Wiley McKinney and fourth son, Jonathan Rush and his wife Amanda, and their children Warren Daniel, and Victoria Elizabeth McKinney; and siblings, Betty Green, Wiley McKinney and Chester McKinney. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday June 12, 2024 at Bailey Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Blaney Pridgen officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 12, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. until service hour at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton. <![CDATA[Bluefield Daily Telegraph: Obituaries]]> (22)

KOREA [ndash]After 73 years, Cpl Ray Kirby Lilly will be laid to rest in his beloved mountains of West Virginia. Known as Kirby to his family, he was born on January 19, 1933. The only son of Lake and Cordy Lilly and brother to four sisters, Eva Barker, Norma Hamm, Carol Louise Roland and Patricia Smith. Kirby joined the Army at 17, before the Korean War broke out, and spent four months of basic training in Fort Knox, KY. He was then sent to Korea with the 1st Calvary and began fighting the invading North Koreans. On November 2, 1950, the Battle of Usan began, and his battalion was eventually surrounded and overtaken by the Chinese Army, who were new to the fight. Reports indicate that Kirby's unit fought until their ammunition ran out. Those that could walk were taken prisoner and thus the beginning of untold hardships. He was eventually housed at Prison Camp 5 and it was reported that Kirby died February 28, 1951, and was buried by his fellow POW's. That marked the end of any known whereabouts of Kirby until October 1, 2023, when the Army contacted his family to report that he had been identified using DNA, and that he had been buried as a Korean War unknown in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, known as the "Punch Bowl", in Hawaii since February 1956. In February 2024, Army representatives met with the surviving family to give a detailed report of his decades long journey home. While he was missing in action, in addition to his parents, two sisters, Eva Barker and Norma Hamm, and a nephew, David Thompson, died. He is survived by sisters, Carol Louise Roland and Patricia Smith; Two nephews, Phillip Hamm and Michael Smith, and two nieces, Dr. Rhonda L. Hamm and Andrea Smith Fleming. Four great-nieces, Morgan Thompson Tabor, Dr. Alexandrea Smith Berry, Lilly Fleming and Merrit Fleming and two great-nephews, Evan Smith and Jacob Smith. The family would like to offer a special thank you to nephew Phillip Hamm for starting the process of identification by research, reaching out to the Army and submitting DNA back in 2010. A military funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of Memorial Funeral Directory. The Honorable Judge Omar Aboulhosn will deliver the eulogy and Bishop Fred Farley will officiate the service. Cpl. Ray Kirby Lilly will be interred with full military honors at Roselawn Cemetery near his parents. Visitation for family and friends will be from 10:00 until the service hour at the funeral home. <![CDATA[Bluefield Daily Telegraph: Obituaries]]> (43)

MARYVILLE [ndash] Anne Backus Whaley, age 80, of Bluefield, Virginia, passed away peacefully in Maryville, Tennessee on December 28, 2023. Ms. Whaley was an educator for forty-four years, having taught in the Tazewell County School System forty of those years, the majority at either Graham Junior High and Middle Schools and Graham High School. She will be remembered for her love for her family and her students, her contagious laugh, her tender heart, her desire to push individuals to be the best version of themselves, and her love of all animals. Anne was born December 12, 1943, to the late George Clarence Backus and Elizabeth Hale Backus. She was raised on their family farm in Falls Mills with her surviving brothers John Backus ( the late Charlotte, Sue), Dr. William( Bill) Backus ( Jo Ellen), and Joe ( the late MaryAnn). Anne graduated from Graham High School in 1961 as the class salutatorian. She went on to attend Radford College and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Education in 1965. In 1974 Anne earned her Master of Education from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Anne was a devoted teacher in every way and served as the president of her local Virginia Education Association chapter for many years. She was always committed to the profession and believed that teachers are invaluable in helping shape the lives of their students and being a support for students that otherwise might not have encouragement or direction. She wholeheartedly lived her life knowing that her commitment to her students was not just from August to June and did not end when the final bell of the day rang. After her retirement, she continued to put emphasis on education and still enjoyed teaching friends about biological sciences. She worked briefly with Citizens of Conservation Corps of WV helping young people with soft skills training and helping individuals study for their GED, as well as with DISH Network for several years in customer service. Anne also loved doing arts and crafts and writing poetry. In addition to her brothers, Anne is survived by her daughter Dr. Hope E. Watson and her husband Bob of Maryville, TN, her grandchildren Carrington Floyd ( Adam) and Joseph Watson who reside in Lebanon, Tennessee, and her treasured little companion, her dog, Bear. Anne has numerous surviving nephews, nieces, and great nephews and nieces, all of whom she loved so dearly. Preceding Anne in death, in addition to her parents and her sister-in- laws, are her sister Ruth Backus Rose (Cecil), and her brothers Gene Backus(Betty, Jimmy ), and George Carrington Backus, and several nephews. Her best friend for over fifty years, Deloris Carter, joined her in Heaven one week after her passing. As difficult as it was to let "BB," as her grandchildren called her, go, especially during the holiday season, she left her family with a beautiful final gift of reminding them " the holidays are magical." May all that read this and knew her be blessed by her message.A memorial celebration of Anne's life is planned for Saturday, April 27,2024 at Graham Christian Church in Bluefield, VA with visitation beginning at 10:30am and services starting at noon.In lieu of flowers, and because of Anne's affection for her beloved Graham High School and her awareness that hard work needs to be recognized, the Anne Backus Whaley Memorial Scholarship has been established to continue to honor her legacy. Scholarship donations can be mailed to : Anne Backus Whaley Memorial Scholarship c/o CBBC Bank P.O. Box 9730 Maryville, Tennessee 37802-9730

<![CDATA[Bluefield Daily Telegraph: Obituaries]]> (52)

FLORENCE, AL [mdash] Our beloved father was born in Welch, West Virginia on October 26, 1932. He passed to the Lord on March 31, 2024. In between those dates, he lived life to the fullest. He never met a stranger and never forgot a name.To hear him say it, Dad barely graduated from Welch High School in 1950. Following graduation, he went to work in the Tralee and Gary Mine #14 "because that is what you did when you were a poor Italian". He was drafted by the Army during the Korean Conflict and used his G.I. Bill benefits to obtain his undergraduate degree from Concord College and Masters Degree from Columbia University. It appears his long love affair with typewriters began during this time period and continued to the day he passed. Though, he embraced email late in life, he never stopped typing letters to his family and friends. We have been able to confirm he is the very last person on earth to purchase a typewriter ribbon. After graduating from Columbia University, "by the skin of his teeth", Dad fell into a career path best suited for his ability to B. S. and befriend - Politics. New York City Mayor John Lindsey (D) started Dad on his career path by giving him a position overseeing Counselors at the YMCA of Greater New York. That led to a job offer from Baltimore Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro III (D) where he managed the Neighborhood Youth Corps. Mayor D'Alesandro eventually put Dad on his personal staff as a Special Assistant where he managed constituent services and special projects. Following his initial foray in Maryland politics, Dad worked for Jerry Hoffberger , who owned the Baltimore Orioles and National Brewery. After a lifetimes worth of National Beer and Oriole games, Dad returned to Maryland politics where he worked for U.S. Senator Charles. McC. Mathias (R), Governor Harry Hughes (D) and Congresswoman Helen Delich Bentley (R). Political party affiliation was not important to Dad. He just liked to get paid. After a lifetime in politics, Dad was appointed to the Maryland Parole Commission by Governor William Donald Schaefer. This was his last public service position before entering the private sector. Dad spent his remaining years consulting with criminal defense lawyers on helping them get the clients he used to keep in jail - out of jail. Dad was predeceased in death by his beloved wife, Donna. He is survived by two disobedient sons, Dan and Anthony. His nephew, Tom Mather and niece Diana Murphy. As well as four grandchildren. He is also survived by everyone he met as he made sure you were part of his life and vice-versa. Dad was interred at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens on April 4, 2024. Pursuant to his wishes, there was no funeral service and there was not supposed to be any obituary or announcement of his death. But, his children have a long history of ignoring his wishes and desires. So be it.
