He said he's only 10 pounds lighter than last year, but looks closer to 20. His face is noticeably thinner and so is his caboose. "I'm going to keep battling it," he said. "I'd like to try playing a little lighter and see if it will help. "Al (Campanis, Dodgers vice president) and Tommy (Lasorda, Dodgers manager) have been on me for years to lose some weight, so I'll see if it enhances my performance.
"Hopefully, it's going to make me quicker in everything I do and give me a little more bat speed." This could be an ongoing struggle. Scioscia said last year he reported at 219 and put on three pounds during camp. "It's a battle, a struggle" he said. "It's something I have to keep working on." So he peddles the bike. He runs. He tries to recapture something he's lost at least temporarily. Scioscia's 1986 season was sadly typical for the Dodgers, who entered the season with high hopes only to stumble. "If I hit .260 but move runners over, take pitches so guys can steal, get my walks, it's possible I could contribute more offensively than if I hit .300.
"You ask Steve Sax if he thinks he had a good year hitting .332 and he'll say no. I'm looking to help the team win. And that's how you measure success in our society." Scioscia continues his peddling, taking time only to check his pulse. It's early in baseball's spring, but this figures to be an ongoing process. "I feel good," he said.

Frank Genco, 51, of Covina will cover the distance on crutches with a roller skate on his only foot It will be Genco's 13th marathon, and he says he's never failed to finish. "I use the distraction method," he explained. "I concentrate on what I'm doing, and I think positively." Genco, a professional hypnotist, had his congenitally deformed leg amputated at age 3. Leroy King's application says he's single, unemployed and running his third marathon.
He wears a medium-sized T-shirt. Leroy King is a dog. He'll run beside his said. At least two sets of identical twins and a family group of six brothers will run. Tom and Jerry Leinhard have been entering marathons together since 1975.
The 58-year-old twins plan to run side-by-side. "We tell jokes as we run," Tom said. "There is a theory that if you talk while running a marathon, you are pacing yourself properly."
