Come say hi!
A memorial bench on Hole 3 at Cedar Ridges Golf Course was installed and dedicated (made and donated by Big D’s Oil Field Services) at Cedar Ridges Golf Course in Rangely last weekend and the annual couples tournament will, from now on, be known as the Ellen Boudreaux Couples Classic, in her honor. “It was her favorite tournament to play in,” her daughter-in law and one of the tournament organizers, Norian Edwards said. “She played with Clark (Norian’s husband) each year. Norian and Clark finished second to champions Douglas and Britt Choate of Battlement Mesa Golf Club, in the field of 31 teams, divided into four flights. Edwards said a “large amount” of donations and sponsorships were gathered and will be used to construct a memorial wall at the Rangely Cemetery. “Before Ellen passed she was working hard at raising money for that wall,” Edwards said. “She wanted a place where family and friends could go to reflect and remember their loved ones that didn’t have a plot. We wanted to make her dream a reality and we are so much closer, thanks to all the sponsors, donations and the raffle. It was a great turnout, with great people and a memorable weekend for Ellen’s family for sure!” Clark Edwards is pictured teeing off No. 3.

If you’ve been watching the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France, you might be surprised to know there’s an unusual connection between Team U.S.A. athletes and Meeker: the wool in their official Opening Ceremony Blazers. The sheep that thwart the sheepdogs every year at the Meeker Classic belong to one of the ranches that are part of Jeanne Carver’s Shaniko Wool Company. Twelve years ago, Jeanne and her late husband Dan, owners of the historic Imperial Stock Ranch in Oregon, began supplying Merino wool to designer Ralph Lauren for the official Olympic gear athletes wear at various ceremonies. They also became the first ranch in the world to meet a new global wool standard focused on land and animal care. With demand increasing, in 2018, Jeanne created Shaniko Wool Company to scale the supply of wool meeting Textile Exchange’s global Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), the leading standard in the world with stringent guidelines for land management, humane animal husbandry and worker welfare. Six of the 10 sheep ranches who make up the Shaniko Wool Company wool supply are located in Colorado, including in the Meeker area. Shaniko Wool provides certified wool to U.S. brands and manufacturers, including Ralph Lauren. This year marks the first year Shaniko wool has appeared in the Summer Olympics.

The sheep lead event is a fun event for spectators and participants alike (above). A year’s worth of labor, tears, laughter, and learning marked the close of the 2024 Rio Blanco County Fair. This year’s official photographer, Kaysyn Chintala, and auctioneer Josh Smith were both raised in Rio Blanco County, suiting this year’s “homegrown” theme. RBC Fair Board Secretary Karen Arnold said she would like to thank all of the department supervisors for their work during fair week. Premiums for indoor exhibits can be collected at the RBC Extension Offices. Some of this year’s Grand Champions (complete, official results were not available as of press time) include Hayden Garcia, Kinley Lewis, Cienna Rogers, Klayton Carroll, Ryann Mergelman, Johnny Allmon-Rust, Charlie Rogers, Elijah Rundberg, Elliane Rundberg, Riley Alger, Tanner Shults and Dustin Ward. A complete list of fair results will be published when it becomes available.
